Constructed in 1502 (during the Ming Dynasty), once served as a crucial military fortification, it is now the most impressive and representative section of the striking Great Wall. Twisting and turning at an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,281 feet), the Badaling Great Wall appears exceptionally lofty on the undulating mountains. Everybody who visits Peking wants to see the Great Wall and for good reason: it is one of the wonders of the world.  And the Badaling Great Wall is one of the popular sections. As you stand on the top tower and look at the wall snaking its way across the tops of the mountains, close your eyes for a moment and see in your mind's eye the ancient armies locked in combat, and hear the whistle of arrows and the clang of striking swords. It is a place to reflect upon the past the wonder about the future.

Although Beijing has been the capital of China for five dynasties, the only imperial mausoleums complex in the vicinity of the city today is the Ming Tombs. The sight was labeled as the World Culture Heritage in 2003.The Ming tombs lie in a broad valley to the south of Tianshou (Longevity of Heaven) Mountain in Changping County, about 50 kilometers northwest of Beijing proper. To the southwest of this valley, a branch of the Yanshan Range suddenly to breaks off and forms a natural gateway to the 40-square-kilometer basin in which the tombs were built.
